Everyone has a favorite Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe. For years I would switch from recipe to recipe hoping to find the one that we would all love. I would try one for a while but eventually, it would start to fall flat or be too puffy and I would feel like maybe there’s a better one out there. I never want to complicate my baking so I was looking for a simple Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe that was still delicious.
A little background to this Simple Chocolate Chip Cookie Secret
My daughter has become the proclaimed Cookie maker in our house, which is interesting because that was exactly how I was known in my family as I was growing up. I love to bake, and cookies were the place I started. But perfecting the cookie is a completely different story. While sometimes my cookies turn out perfectly the next time they may be too flat or too dense. I noticed She seems to get it right every time.
So I asked her how she makes them turn out so perfectly every single time and she gave me this secret I’m about to share with you
It’s all In the Ingredients
When I follow a recipe exactly I hope to get the same results every time. But sometimes that’s not enough. Kind of like everything else in life huh? Key ingredients in cookies always include flour, sugar, chocolate chips and the secret in her cookies includes Extra Baking Soda.
Obviously, we know that too much soda can make a recipe taste funny. So It doesn’t take much but Instead of the required amount she always rounds her teaspoon giving it just enough extra to make her cookies turn out with the same texture and taste every time. They always seem to have just the right amount of outer crunch and softness. I’ve also noticed her cookies don’t dry out as quickly. Typically I will bake cookies and then get them into the freezer by the next day so they stay fresh. But with her little trick, it seems these cookies stay fresh for days.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Bonus Secret
The Other Big Secret is never over-bake your cookies. While the recipe may say bake for 10 minutes your oven may bake slower or faster. Check out your own settings. When a recipe calls for 10 minute baking time I will set my timer and start checking at the 8-minute mark.
A Few More Tips
If you bake your cookie with a little brown on the edges but still fairly light in the middle it will keep your cookie from drying out so quickly. Keeping them moist and chewy.
When you mix your ingredients( I use my Bosch Mixer ) Make sure to only mix until blended. Over mixing can cause a difference in your cookie texture.
Presentation Is Key
After the cookies cool, I like to bag some up and give them away in gift baskets. They could even be bagged and put in the freezer for a few weeks. Maybe you can break them out for a special occasion or give someone a special pick-me-up.
One time my friend gave this to me and although it was just one cookie the packaging and thoughtfulness of this presentation brought me extra joy during a hard season.
So there you have it. You now know our family secrets 🙂 Well at least this one. I won’t bore you with the others….at least not today.
