Here is a delicious Meatball recipe that I brought from my mother’s kitchen and then tweaked a bit in mine to create these delicious, sweet and savory meatballs.
We start with meat
As I was growing up, my mother most often cooked with beef or chicken. We were not a big pork family.
Except at holidays where ham was always one of the main dishes.
My husband, Jason, came from a pork family, in part because they raised hogs and the meat was readily available.
So when I married into his family, I realized that pork in meatballs can take the flavor up a notch. Adding ground ham or sausage gave the whole meatball a new twist.
Another helpful tip when making meatballs
For years I would struggle with making meatballs because I didn’t love touching the meat when mixing and shaping the meatball.
It’s not that I don’t like getting my fingers dirty, but the meat was usually cold and I just didn’t enjoy the whole process.
But when I discovered I could just plop my meat into my mixer and with the dough hook mix the whole thing without ever touching the meatball I realized how fun it was to make this simple dinner or party food.
Its all in the sauce
While the texture and flavor of the meat is certainly central to the taste of the meatball, the sauce changes everything about the dish.
Think about it, when you add sauce to your nuggets or salad dressing to your lettuce, how you experience the flavor changes the whole dish, depending on what you choose.
My favorite meatball is always accompanied by a homemade bbq sauce.
This sauce includes Ketchup, brown sugar, garlic salt, minced dried onion flakes, Hickory Smoke and Worcestershire.
