I love coffee bars! I have an entire folder saved on my computer that is designated to creating these unique areas. It’s one of those spots in the home that makes a statement but is also functional for guests or everyday use. Most people like the feeling a coffee bar gives them even if they don’t drink coffee.
Rustic Industrial
There are so many ways to approach decorating a space like this but I love a rustic industrial vibe with a chalkboard and wooden shelves. I feel it gives a good foundation to decorating throughout the seasons. Christmas is always a fun time to cozy up a coffee bar since that’s when the hot drinks flow freely.
How we did it
To Create this space we used our base table to measure and tape off the area. This was an old fold up wooden wallpaper table I found at a garage sale 8 years ago for $50! I wanted to use it outside at a graduation open house. I had no idea how much these tables were really worth. But I soon moved it into my main living space because I liked it so much.
To paint the wall We just taped off an area based on the width of the table. Our wall happened to have a cold air return right above the area we wanted to use so we painted the vent the same color to try to blend it into the chalkboard. After that we used chalkboard paint and just rolled it right over the taped area. This needed 2 coats to give it full coverage.
Next I bought an old board from a local small business that resells auction finds. The nice man found a board from his stash and then cut it in half providing two live edged shelves for under $10! I cleaned and brushed them with an alcohol that kills any bugs or other things living in the board. After that we hung 4 black brackets on the wall to hang the shelves.
Finally I asked my gifted chalk art daughters to craft their designs with chalk markers on the wall. Isn’t it funny how we spend our kids’ childhood teaching them to not write on the walls and then when they grow up we change the rules?! 🙂
What It Looks Like Now
The final result is a unique spot that looks homey and a little trendy at the same time. In fact It is probably one of the most asked about spaces in our home but one of the easiest focal points to create. This can be used for a drink bar but for us it often doubles as a buffet line as well. More Recently we have been talking about adding some fun lights to the top of the shelves to brighten this space when we use this at night.
Like this little waffle bar we created for our daughters 18th birthday party.
What if I don’t have that much space?
Sometimes you may not have an entire wall so you could create a space with one cabinet door. It can be as simple as you’d like to make it. Here is an example of a gift I made for a friend that could work anywhere. It would be perfect for an apartment or small corner space. To finish it I would add a high table for your coffee pot. This would also anchor the space.
Fast and Easy Project
This was a fun and fast project. I purchased an old cabinet door from the home store and then painted the inset of the door with chalkboard paint. The outside was brushed with a chalk paint and water mixture. Then just add shelves and hooks for all your coffee or hot cocoa bar needs.
I hope this gave you some ideas on how to get started designing your own space.
If it was helpful I’d love it if you would pin and share with friends.
