When you’re at the mall is there always a smell that makes you hungry even if you weren’t hungry when you walked through the doors? The smell of homemade pretzels drifting through the air is one of my favorite aromas.
Did you know we buy feelings not things? So if the smell of bread creates a feeling of hunger I might run right on down to the middle and find Aunt Annies or Ben’s and grab myself a delicious snack. One of the best places to get pretzels is a local Pretzel shop called Jojo’s pretzels Or… if those choices aren’t available we can just make some at home in the kitchen.
We’ve been making homemade buttery pretzels for almost 3 decades in our kitchen. Still the Same recipe. Still Same buttery goodness. We would often host pretzel parties when our kids were growing up. It is Such a fun way to draw people together and children to feel ownership in the baking process.
Let’s get started making homemade pretzels
Today I’m going to show you how to make your own delicious buttery yeast pretzels. Remember when we made Oatmeal Bread last week? If you missed it I talked about yeast and steps to make sure the yeast will properly proof. Go here to read more.
To begin I get out my Bosch Mixer. I’ve had this mixer as a wedding gift and I still use it multiple times a week. The dough hook attachment mixes the dough and keeps me from a sore arm.
There are so few ingredients in this recipe making it easy to throw together. Only a few pantry items mixed together to start to form the dough.
There are two different kinds of flour in this recipe, All-purpose, and bread flour. Add in some salt and your recipe is almost complete.
While you’re mixing your flours together you can start proofing your yeast. Add warm water and yeast together with 2 TBSP brown Sugar and let set 5-10 min. Adding a bit of sugar helps to activate the yeast. After it starts to bubble incorporate this into your flour and begin to mix. If the mixture is too crumbly I add warm water by the tsp to my flour mix.
Stir this with the dough hook and allow to rise for at least 1-2 hours. After the dough has doubled in size, take small balls and roll them out into long ropes to shape your pretzel. Through the years we’ve seen many unique pretzels. Some children would make airplanes, hearts, crosses, initials, and more.
I’m always happy when people work together in the kitchen. There’s something about food that brings people together. It’s such a great way to learn and have fun as we laugh together around the counter.
I’ve copied this easy and fun recipe below.
I would love to know if you make this and how you liked them.
