Do you love the feel of old doors and windows in decor? Like freestanding doors in a garden or simply styled doors in a home? I do love it so much! It’s so satisfying to me to take something no one else wanted and find a way to breathe life into the object again. I think many people like the idea of old objects being repurposed but just don’t have a vision, the time, or tools it takes to craft a new purpose for the piece. I’m always looking for simple and unique ways to repurpose old windows and doors.
Today I’m going to show you 3 easy ways I have upscaled old doors to make a space feel warm and inviting.
Old Doors used as Garden Sheds
This door shed is one of my all-time favorite ways we have upscaled doors, a chandy, an antique bench, and some old lumber into a special outdoor room for a wedding we hosted last summer in our yard.
I have used this particular idea for picture booths and a flower potting shed. This is great if you have a small unsightly area in your yard that needs a little character. A Hammock, bench, or swing would all be lovely and unique in a space like this.
Old Doors used on Sliding Tracks
Another fun way to use old doors is on black steel sliding tracks. This is a super easy and fun way to block an unsightly laundry room or to give character to a bedroom/bathroom suite. It also can also add charm to a room even if the door is never slid shut.
Both of these doors were dry brushed and sanded down to give them a cottage shabby-chic design. We sprayed frost on the window to block the visibility. And finally, I found some decals from Amazon and we carefully peeled them onto the dry glass.
The Most Basic and Simple way to use old Doors
These next photos are probably the most simple and basic ideas on how to use old doors but they sure can leave a big impact. I typically have an unused door on my front porch. It’s such a fun way to bring charm and character to any space. You can put a simple wreath on the door or a sign that welcomes your guests as they walk up to the door.
The two pictures are two of my most liked on Instagram and pinned on Pinterest. They are truly so simple to create. The door below has an extra special story. I asked my daughter Malaina, who is a chalk artist, to help me with her fantastic skills to write ‘Merry and Bright’ on a board that I had spray painted with chalk paint. I asked her to do this in July before she moved away to study in Ireland. Around Christmas time I stapled the chalk art to this red door and staged it with lights, mistletoe, and Christmas trees for a dramatic and fun welcome on our porch. It made me feel in an odd sort of way like she was coming home for Christmas.
